Fairy tale ballet in three acts

The idea for The Nutcracker ballet came from theone-time director of the Tsarist theatre who, based on E.T.A. Hoffmann’s fairy tale entitled the Nutcracker and the Mouse King, wanted to stage a fairy tale ballet that would surpass all that had gone before, both in sound and in spectacle. Tchaikovsky was asked to compose the music and after Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty his third and final ballet was also a great success. It was the six-movement suite of the music of The Nutcracker that was first performed in March 1892, and in December of the same year the spectacularly presented theatrical work was also performed. The Nutcracker has become the most frequently played ballet piece of all time.

A betyárok a magyar néphagyomány jellegzetes alakjai. Népdalok, népmondák, balladák őrzik híres betyárjaink emlékét, de tárgyi népművészetünknek is kedvelt témái a betyárábrázolások. Alakjuk a népi emlékezetben gyakran idealizált hősként maradt fenn.

One evening – two dance productions by the Szeged Contemporary Dance Company.

The Fitos Dezső Dance Company is careful to regularly stage dance theatre performances that consider the authentic transmission of folklore and the cultures of various historical Hungarian regions as their primary goal. Transylvania Express is a selection of Transylvanian dances and music. With this performance, we want to convey the message that traditional culture lives on in all of us who believe in the value of keeping tradition alive—because tradition defines our future!

Marék Veronika kedves kis hősei arra tanítanak minket, hogy ne akarjunk másnak látszani, csak azért, hogy befogadjanak minket olyanok, akikkel nincsen semmi közös bennünk. "Kippkopp a havas erdőben sétált, mikor odaröppent hozzá barátja, a cinke…" kezdődik Marék Veronika meséje egy egészen különleges napról, melyben a kis gesztenyefiú ellátogat a városba, hogy megtudja, miért nőtt fenyőfa egy házban, a szoba közepén. Kalandja során megismerkedik a kis Csillaggal, aki végigkalauzolja őt a díszbe öltözött fenyőfán, s végül megtudja ő is mi is az a Karácsony.

The evoked era in the performance coincides with the time of the original premiere of Swan Lake. At the same time the second half of the 19th century was also a period known for the spreading of mental hospitals; patients 'possessed' by animal spirits and treatments of mental illnesses by torture and other bizarre methods.

Some people need to immerse themselves in the world of a true classic every evening: this family fairy tale ballet by the Szeged Contemporary Dance Company gives every member of the family the opportunity to do just that.

We don’t really understand why he does what he does – Hermes is an enigma. His personality irritates us, yet there is something about him that captivates us. How does he enchant us? What is at the heart of the magic that this taboo-breaking, charming and arrogant trickster casts on us?

What do people really want? The answer is difficult, since we are constantly searching for a way out of a perfect world, the way back to Eden after our exile. The Eve & Adam performance addresses this universal question through the language of movement and the artistic representation of two young choreographers.

A Székely gate is a symbol of ancient power, faith, hope, belonging to God, a channel of communication between heaven and earth. Its three posts represent the unity of body, soul and spirit, and its carvings are symbols that render protection, grace and blessing.

This production of the FrenÁk Company features adynamic team, the members of a new generation. The young, creative dancers draw on the energies of their colourful cultural and linguistic differences as they bring a new creative approach to FrenÁk’s concept. It is a fusion of the arts, a multimedia work with two contrasting yet complementary parts that reflect on the contradictions of our times.
